Radio training & education resources
Recommended books and training materials (click on links to access more information):
Technician Class
-- if you're new to the hobby or just looking to refresh your general knowledge...this book has every question that could be asked on the Technician exam.
General Class FCC License Preparation for Element 3 General Class Theory
-- when you're ready to upgrad to General, I highly recommend this book. Actually, any of Gordon West's books are great...well written and everything you need to pass.
Extra Class, Element 4 FCC License Preparation
-- after many years of being off the air, I was able to pick up this book and pass my Extra exam with flying colors...no problem. Now that there is no code requirements, many will use this book to upgrade to Extra. See you on the Extra bands...Gordon will also give you advice on how to learn CW as well...so that you can join us for a chat with Morse Code.
Arrl Amateur Radio on the Move
-- great book on installing mobile radios and antennas in cars, boat, airplanes, motorcycles, RVs and such. If you're interested in mobile ham radio, then get this book. You'll refer to it often. I encourage you to check out mobile ham radio...especailly if you have a long commute. In 19 months of operating at the bottom of the sun spot cycle, I've worked over 140 DXCC countries with 100 watts and a hamstick....so it's possible to DX on 80-10m...while on the move.
Emergency Power: For Radio Communications
-- if you're getting ready for the hurricane season or just getting into ARES, then check this book out. Has some great ideas on emergency power from generators to solar panels...
Hello World: A Life in Ham Radio
-- fun book to read about a man's life in ham radio as told by his old QSL cards.
Arrl Antenna Book: The Ultimate Reference for Amateur Radio Antennas (Arrl Antenna Book)
-- very technical book regarding every type of ham radio antenna. Great resource to have around the house. And, if you click here, you'll be able to buy it cheaper than anywhere else on amazon.com. I always buy their used books and they are new or like new...I can't tell the difference plus I save a lof of money versus buying it from the ARRL.
The Arrl Handbook for Radio Communications 2007 (Arrl Handbook for Radio Communications)
-- good overall book on everything in ham radio.
Arrl Repeater Directory 2006/2007 (Arrl Repeater Directory)
-- if you're in to 2m/440 repeaters, then it's time to update your repeater directory.
F-16 Fighting Falcon Units of Operation Iraqi Freedom (Combat Aircraft)
-- this book has more information about the missions I flew over Iraq in 2003 including the mission that I was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism.
